Strange and Interesting NFL Facts

Being somewhat of a geek when it comes to useless facts and figures, I thought I would pore over the NFL record books to glean some information that may be of interest to others.

Most Times Sacked In One NFL Season:

The Philadelphia Eagles allowed their QB’s to be sacked a record 104 times in 1986.  So logically, you would think that then QB Randall Cunningham is the all-time most sacked QB in one season right?  Wrong.  He was decked 72 times which is second on the list to David Carr of Houston who was planted 76 times in 2002.  Yikes!

Most Punts In An NFL Game:

Considering the record for fewest punts is 0 and was done many times, the record for the biggest snoozefest was way back in 1933 when the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers punted to each other for four straight quarters.  They totaled 33 punts between them.  The sad part is this dubious feat was duplicated in the same season by the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Most Punts In A Career:

Jeff Feagles is by far the record holder in this category with an astronomical 1,713 punts which outdistances second place Sean Landeta by 312 punts.  Feagles played 352 NFL games so divide 1,713 into 352 and he punted an average of 4.86 times per game.

Least Amount Of Yards Passing In A Single Game:

The 1967 Denver Broncos hold this distinction with a whopping -53 yards passing.  That’s right, minus 53 yards.  Denver was up against the Raiders who amazingly enough were a relevant team then.  Surely that is the only minus passing total right?  Wrong.  After the AFL/NFL merger of 1970, it has happened a few times with the closest to the record being the Bengals who accumulated -52 passing yards against the Houston Oilers in 1971.  If you think Andy Dalton is ineffective, try that on for size.

Most Safeties In One Game By A Team:

Considering the record for an entire season is 4, I expected the total to be low.  I didn’t expect one team to garner 3 safeties in one game which is exactly what the 1984 Los Angeles Rams did against the N.Y Giants.  Pass protection must have been a tad weak for the Giants.

Least Amount Of Yards Gained In A Single Game:

The Denver Broncos with their -53 yards passing in the game against the Raiders in 1967 ended up with 48 rushing yards for a -5 yard total.  Laughable right?  For sure, but not the NFL record for futility.  That honor (cough) goes to the Seattle Seahawks who gained (lost) -7 yards against the Rams in 1979.  How would you like to have any of the Hawks players in your fantasy leagues on that day?

The Tallest, Shortest, Lightest and Heaviest Hall of Famers:

“The Big O” Jonathan Ogden at 6’9 is the tallest man along with Bob St. Clair who also stood 6’9.  The shortest inductee is a ties between Darrell Green and Barry Sanders who both stood 5’8”.  Quarterback Paddy Driscoll is the lightest at 160 pounds while Ogden is the holder of the heaviest man title at 345 pounds.

Speaking Of Darrell Green:

Green ran a 4.43 at the age of 52 and to put that into perspective, that’s faster than Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Johnny Manziel and Hazel Briggs (Rick’s dog).  Green could be standing at the finish eating a salad before Dan Marino, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning crossed it.

The Giving Something Back To The People Award Goes To:

Kurt Warner, who is notorious for picking up the dinner check for a random table at a restaurant in which he eats.  He allows his children to select the unsuspecting table and tries to keep it anonymous but alas, it has made it’s way to the media.

AND Finally…..

Kudos to you, because without your support, who in the name of  Seyi Ajirotutu, would ever sit down and watch a 60 minute football game that takes three hours to play and only provides you with enough suspense to last 10 minutes and 43 seconds.  That’s right.  Ten minutes and 43 seconds of actual action in a 3 hour time frame.  Hoodwinked we are.  So in essence if you are lucky, you may be able to see 12 minutes and 38 seconds if the game goes into overtime!
